Coincidence?
"The voice of our original self is
often muffled, overwhelmed, even strangled,
by the voices of other people's expectations."
-- Julia Cameron
A few days ago, I watched (again) a movie that I enjoy very much. I've seen this movie probably 3-4 times and, each time, I am touched . . . not only by the innocence of the characters, but the serious realities of life that mingle in between. The movie is Benny & Joon (1993), with Johnny Depp, Mary Stuart Masterson, Julianne Moore, and Aidan Quinn. I also find the tagline quite telling as well -- "A romance on the brink of reality."
While thinking of how my writing and my art have suffered this Summer during Stress-Fest 2004 (selling a house, buying a business, buying a house, packing, moving 600+ miles, and all of the associated stressors, plus two gazillion more), I stumbled upon not only a showing of Benny & Joon this week, but the quote (above) by Julia Cameron (one of my all-time favorite authors/inspirations). Coincidence?!? I think not!
With the first-annual Southern Belles' Month only a mere six months away, I've spent this week making what are (hopefully) some key contacts with individuals, companies, and organizations to begin the key planning stages of the event. To see this event go from dream to reality, I must keep in front of me at all times the following quote:
"Leap, and the net will appear."
I'm trusting that the proverbial net will appear because, with only six months to plan, implement and pull it all off with perfect style and grace, I must L-E-A-P!
And, with that, I leave you with the conversation between Mary Stuart Masterson (Joon) and Aidan Quinn (Benny), discussing Johnny Depp's character Sam, and his preparation of grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner earlier that evening using an iron and ironing board:
Joon: He can really cook, can't he?
Benny: Yeah, although for grilled cheese,
I might use the wool setting.
Joon: That's what I told him.
Benny: Really? What did he use?
Joon: Rayon. Silk would have been too soggy.
Cotton would have ...
Benny: Would have burned it.
Joon: Right. Fortunately, he consulted me
before giving it steam.
I was four square against it.
It's all in how you look at life. What setting are YOU cooking on???
