Wild About Wilde
A good friend just sent me the following link: "Oscar Wilde Collection Goes Up for Auction" (article only available for 30 days) because she knows how much I am a fan of some of Mr. Wilde's work - most specifically, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and "The Importance of Being Earnest."
When I was young, I saw one of the many movie versions of "The Picture of Dorian Gray" and became totally taken with the dark tale. I've also always joked that I believe there are many that, like Dorian, also have portraits in their own attics (Dick Clark, for one).
I also saw a very obscure version of "The Importance of Being Earnest" starring Christopher Walken in the lead - long before he gained true fame, or became willing to allow himself to let his true range of talent be known, but kept it hidden behind roles that maintained that severe facade.
Sotheby's is expecting the collection to bring more than $1 million. After I'm gone, will anyone be willing to pay for my trinkets, journals, photos, and memorabilia? Or, will I just be another (always) struggling writer, soon forgotten?!?
